Sleep sounds and lullabies
A quiet room is rare. The Sounds tab in Dreamify gives you steady, gentle sound to cover the dishwasher, the neighbors and the dog, under the story or on its own, with a timer so you never have to creep back in.
What is in the Sounds tab
| Sound | What it is good for |
|---|---|
| Rain | The all-rounder. Masks household noise without any pattern to follow. |
| Ocean waves | A slow in-and-out rhythm. Good for children who like to breathe along. |
| Stream | Lighter than rain, with a little movement. Good for daytime naps. |
| Night forest and crickets | For children who find pure noise too flat. |
| Wind | Soft and low. Pairs well with a fireplace. |
| Fireplace | Warm, irregular crackle. Many parents use it for themselves too. |
| White noise and fan | Classic masking sounds. Keep the volume low. |
| Pink noise | Like steady rain without the drops. Gentler than white. |
| Brown noise | Deep and even, like a distant waterfall. The gentlest of the three. |
| Heartbeat | A slow heartbeat for newborns, the sound they knew before they were born. |
| Classical lullabies | Brahms, Debussy, Chopin, Satie, Mozart and Bach, played gently. |
Mix up to three at once (rain plus fireplace plus a lullaby is a favorite). The mix keeps playing with the phone locked until you stop it or the timer fades it down. Set a background sound during setup and it will play softly under every story automatically.
Using sound well
Sound helps most when it does one job: hiding the noises that would otherwise wake a child. It is not a sleep aid in itself, and the evidence for pink and brown noise in children is thin, which we are honest about in our guide to sleep sounds for kids. Keep the device across the room, keep the volume low, and use the timer. If your child only sleeps with the sound on, fade it a little quieter each week rather than stopping all at once.
Common questions
- Do the sounds keep playing when the phone is locked?
- Yes. Sounds and narration keep playing with the screen off until you stop them or the sleep timer fades them out.
- Can I play sounds under a story?
- Yes. Pick a background sound and it plays softly under the narration, starting and stopping with the story. You can also mix up to three sounds on their own from the Sounds tab.
- How loud should sleep sounds be for a baby?
- The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests placing a sound machine at least 7 feet (about 200 cm) from the crib, keeping the volume low (well under 50 decibels, roughly a quiet conversation) and using a timer rather than running it all night.
- What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
- All three are steady, broadband sounds. White noise has equal energy at every frequency and sounds like static. Pink noise has less energy at high frequencies and sounds like steady rain. Brown noise rolls off even more and sounds like a distant waterfall or a plane cabin. Most families find pink or brown gentler on the ear.
